When the driver of a passenger car drives irresponsibly or operates an unsafe vehicle, the results can be tragic. When the driver of a large truck does the same, it can be even worse. Tractor trailers and dump trucks have the potential to cause serious injuries and deaths.

In major cities like Houston and Dallas we are accustomed to sharing the road with many trucks. When safe trucks are driven in a safe manner, few accidents occur. But when poorly maintained trucks are on the roads, or when truck drivers speed or change lanes without signaling, other drivers are put at considerable risk.

Fatal Large Truck Crashes

Texas has more than its fair share of fatal crashes involving trucks among states. In a report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration titled An Analysis of Fatal Large Truck Crashes, it is noted that Texas leads the country in combination truck crash deaths. "Eleven states account for 51 percent of the combination trucks involved in fatal crashes, and ten states account for 52 percent of the single-unit trucks involved in fatal crashes. Texas had more combination trucks involved in fatal crashes than any other state. However, Texas also has more miles of public roads than any other state, 300,507 miles..."

When trucks are involved in crashes with other vehicles, passengers of other vehicles are killed four times as often.

"The maximum injury level of all people in the vehicle varies greatly between large trucks and other vehicles. The "no injury" category is more than three times as likely to be seen among large trucks (52%) as opposed to other vehicles (17%)... The percent of vehicles where someone was killed is more than four times as high in other vehicles (7.4%) as compared to large trucks (1.6%)."
